Activity # 5.1 - Internet of Things as Theory of Media and Information
Internet of Things
Sources:
a.) What is the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things is simply the concept of connecting any device with a switch to the internet. It is also the network of interconnected electronic devices that can sense or interact with their environment without face-to-face interaction.b.) What brought this theory about?
Kevin Ashton first brought this concept in 1999 when he
said that RFID (Radio-frequency identification) is a necessity for the Internet
of Things. It was mentioned that, "If all objects and people in daily
life were equipped with identifiers, computers could manage and inventory
them."
This theory states that the Internet of Things
are all electronic devices that exchange data or information through the
Internet using a local or wireless network. Anything that can be connected will
be connected as long as it involves the internet. This theory also pertains to
the possibility of inanimate objects to speak and interact with people.
c.) Do you like the concept of IoT? Why or why not?
Honestly speaking, I actually like the concept of IoT since it has already contributed a lot to the progress of our society. It was able to shape and change the world's journey. I cannot deny the impact it has made to each and everyone of us though I still need to be vigilant of the effects.
There are a lot of reasons why I approve of IoT as part of our lives and one of them is the capability of it to store huge amounts of data. The more information we can keep, the more we tend to be sure of the decisions we make. Iot also helped in making our lives easier by saving time. Through the help of technology, a lot of things are accessible compared to the lives in the past.

d.) In what situations do you encounter IoT in the Philippines?
I have encountered some situations wherein IoT is involved. One prominent example is whenever I hang out with my family. We usually book Grab as our mode of transportation. I am able to contact the driver through the help of the Internet. Even though they are far away from my location, they could still receive my message. Another things is that all of their drivers depend on this application called Waze, it's a navigation software that serves as a guide for them when they are not aware of the drop-off place.
Another thing is when I set an alarm for school. My phone automatically sets the alarm 5 minutes before the original time I placed. It helps me a lot in the morning because I usually move like a turtle.
e.) How do you think IoT will evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?
I think that the IoT will improve a lot in terms of security and efficiency. Artificial Intelligence in our homes may now be considered as a norm after 3-5 years. It will soon become a "thing" since most of us like it when we're aligned with the trends. Voice-controlled devices, sensor-based electronics and even the gadgets may now be controlled with the help of programming. It will surely make a huge impact in a sense that there might be advantages and disadvantages. Though the security and efficiency is high compared to what we have now there is still a possibility that IoT may take over our minds. This can result in laziness and idle citizens.
f.) What do you think is the relationship/cause and effect of IoT in media and information literacy?
I think that the relationship of the Internet of Things with media and information literacy is that there is corresponding responsibility needed for the Internet users if they want to prioritize literacy. If a person solely depends their life in the Internet of Things they should know the liability of being able to use one. A person has an obligation to use it properly without abusing their right and power.
